Stop, Swap, and Roll: Poetry Printables

I have had the opportunity to use a product from The Purple Teacher in my classroom this month.  Linda has been so great to work with, and I hope I get to work with her again in the future.

I asked her a little bit about herself:

"I've been a teacher for 8 years, having taught everything from grades 5 to 12.  My favourite grades are grades 5/6, which is what I'm currently teaching.  I live in the middle of nowhere (aka on 50 acres of bush) with my husband, 13 month old son, 2 dogs, a cat and soon acquiring chickens. I teach in a French school, and am fluently bilingual.  I love reading, shopping and photography. I am LOVING teachers pay teachers and becoming a Teacher Author.  It's definitely become a passion of mine!"

She shared her Close Reading Poetry product with me.

It was a big hit in my class.  The students found the pages short and not overwhelming, which is important when studying poetry.  We are currently reading Huckleberry Finn, so I decided to use poems by Mark Twain.  Each table got one poem, and each student got a copy of the poetry response sheet.

Each of the three sheets in this products asks different questions about the poem.  I had someone at each table use the three different sheets to get a bigger view of the poem as a whole.

One of the best things about this product is that it can be used with any poem.  I used poems from our current units, and these handouts worked perfectly to begin conversations about the poems.

In addition the sheets talk about three different readings of the poem.  My students usually dislike reading something once, let along three times, but the sheet (especially when folded to  only show one reading at a time) can help them see the value in multiple reads.

After working through the poems individually, I had students share at their table groups what they came up with about the poems using the prompts in Linda's product.  It always amazes me how much they are able to pull from the poems on their own.

This is a poetry idea that must be shared: Tweet: A great solution to poetry and rereading. http://ctt.ec/bMdb0+ @cera0316 #poetrymonth #iteachenglish #teachersfollowteachers
