Sunday Scoop 4/26

9:50 AM Sarah Koves 2 Comments

Forty calendar days left until summer vacation.  Today is a glorious day for Sunday Scoop link-up.

1) It is that time of year to schedule for next year.  As I run PowerSchool for the district, I have a hand in the scheduling and getting things set up for next year.  We have all the student requests in, and the number of sections have been determined.  Now to set it all up in the system.

2) Seniors are working on portfolios and juniors are reading Huckleberry Finn.  Lessons plans have to be done for the non-reading days and my civics classes.  I would love to go in to the school too in order to gt things done.

3) After two track meets this week, there is a lot of laundry to wash.  However, we can't run the washer and shower at the same time...LOL, so first thing first.

1) The goal for the month has been two content-based (not fun linky) posts every week.  I would like to draft the two for this week before tomorrow when school gets crazy again.  In the mean time check out my product exchange from this week.

2) Our bathroom cabinets need a serious cleaning out.  Hair ties, bobby pins, and bath products are taking over my bathroom.  I need a trash bag and some time to pull everything out and trash as much as I possibly can without the girls finding out.

1) Today is the free day at the museums in Grand Rapids, so the girls, my parents, and nephews are headed over there to check it out.  I will take lots of pictures, so be sure to follow me on Instagram to see what fun we have today.

Stop, Swap, and Roll: Poetry Printables

I have had the opportunity to use a product from The Purple Teacher in my classroom this month.  Linda has been so great to work with, and I hope I get to work with her again in the future.

I asked her a little bit about herself:

"I've been a teacher for 8 years, having taught everything from grades 5 to 12.  My favourite grades are grades 5/6, which is what I'm currently teaching.  I live in the middle of nowhere (aka on 50 acres of bush) with my husband, 13 month old son, 2 dogs, a cat and soon acquiring chickens. I teach in a French school, and am fluently bilingual.  I love reading, shopping and photography. I am LOVING teachers pay teachers and becoming a Teacher Author.  It's definitely become a passion of mine!"

She shared her Close Reading Poetry product with me.

It was a big hit in my class.  The students found the pages short and not overwhelming, which is important when studying poetry.  We are currently reading Huckleberry Finn, so I decided to use poems by Mark Twain.  Each table got one poem, and each student got a copy of the poetry response sheet.

Each of the three sheets in this products asks different questions about the poem.  I had someone at each table use the three different sheets to get a bigger view of the poem as a whole.

One of the best things about this product is that it can be used with any poem.  I used poems from our current units, and these handouts worked perfectly to begin conversations about the poems.

In addition the sheets talk about three different readings of the poem.  My students usually dislike reading something once, let along three times, but the sheet (especially when folded to  only show one reading at a time) can help them see the value in multiple reads.

After working through the poems individually, I had students share at their table groups what they came up with about the poems using the prompts in Linda's product.  It always amazes me how much they are able to pull from the poems on their own.

This is a poetry idea that must be shared: Tweet: A great solution to poetry and rereading. @cera0316 #poetrymonth #iteachenglish #teachersfollowteachers

I am so thankful to  Doodlebugs Teaching for Five for Friday.  I am also super happy that it is 70 here in Michigan.  Here is a recap of my week.

Did you know the NEA has lesson plans organized by the month of the year?

This will be so helpful this summer as I look to reinvent for fall.

We had a track meet this week in the freezing rain.

Today we are back in the 50s for practice.

I have created a mailing list for Kovecence of the Mind.  When you subscribe, you will receive two free writing products for use in your own classroom.

April 2015 Stitch Fix #6

9:05 PM Sarah Koves 2 Comments

In August I signed up for my first Stitch Fix.  The promise is that for $20 (which gets credited towards any items you keep) you get five items hand-selected for you by a stylist.  You fill out a style profile and link a Pinterest board, so your stylists know what you like.  I think my stylists are getting better and better.

I was a little skeptical when I opened the box.  It was all over the place, and none of it looked like me, but I promised myself when I started this journey to try everything on.

The first item was probably my favorite just out of the box.  I don't own anything in hound"s tooth and the fabric and cut looked promising.  I checked out the card Kelsey, my stylist, sent; since I don't own a pencil skirt, I opted for jeans and a sweater.

Other than the wind catching it, and it being cold outside, I am a big fan of this top.

The pants are from another fix, and I wear them once a week.  Ignore the hot pink shoes as they were close to the door, and hubby wasn't supposed to shoot my feet.

I opted for my black shrug instead of a drape in gray.  I believe this is a great transition to spring piece.

41Hawthorn Ackley Split Neck Blouse $64

Item #2 was a big fan of my husband's.  I don't even own anything in an animal print.  The back was also an interesting cut.

It fit surprisingly well given I wasn't sure about it in the box.

Lots of spring events that require some dressy clothes.  Husband says this for Red's graduation from high school is a MUST....I"m not sold yet.

Eight Sixty Seraphina Faux Wrap Dress $78

Item #3 was another dress in a similar cut and style, but it is a print more along my taste lines.  I am a huge dot fan, and it was a darker color and looser fit.

The suggestion from my friends is red accessories to make this pop.

I could see this made dressy or casual for the classroom.  Plus, anything that is comfy and not constricting is a win in my book.

Collective Concepts Zak Faux Wrap Dot Dress $44

This item worried me the most.  I have never worn a dolman blouse, and the always look so boxy.  Plus, what is up with the cut out top sections.  I turned to my style card for help.  Jeans and a blazer...I could work that.

This is my suede blazer from a previous fix; probably the most expensive piece of clothing in my closet other than my wedding dress.  Jeans are from The Loft.

I was pleasantly surprised by this top and and how it didn't look boxy when I put it on.  It worked well with the blazer or on its own.  However, what do people wear under these cut tops: bra straps are a no-no for me.  Also, how well do they wash?

Pixley Elson Laser-Cut Dolman Blouse $54

#5 is is another blouse, clearly something my stylist feels I need in my wardrobe...which is true.  This one is a little longer, bonus, and bright purple, double bonus.

I can always due gray sweater and jeans!

I am pretty happy with this. It needs a tank top underneath, but that is great since I have a Target tank top addiction.  I also liked the length as it covered my rear!

41Hawthorn Colibri Solid Tab Sleeve Blouse $48
