Grading Student Notebooks with Mailing Labels

This past year I used ISNs for the first time.  I piloted this in my Civics/Economics class as I hadn't taught this class since 2004, and I thought it would be easier to try ISNs with a class I didn't have an established routine in.  (I will be rolling them out in all four of my classes this year).   However, I will be calling them Smash Books thanks to Eat Write Teach.

Well, my two Civics classes were plugging away, and after the first two weeks, I decided I had better collect them and check them, so I grabbed my grade sheets for those classes and sat down one Sunday afternoon...six hours later I was able to leave the school.  I knew something had to change because while I loved what the notebooks were doing for my students, I could NOT do this every two weeks to stay on top of grading.

I could not opt out of grading the notebooks because there were basically all the homework/daily work that the students had, but I also wanted to be conscious of not giving them a lot of points for just copying items off the board (input side).  I needed something to speed up the process and hopefully help students clearly understand their grades.

I saw this Pinterest Pin (click image for pin) from I Love My Classroom and knew I was headed in the right direction to simplify my life.

The next trip to town resulted in two packages of mailing labels.  I bought packages with 30 on a sheet since that worked out to just about how many notebooks I received on any given collection day.

It took a little while to get the formatting correct, to get it all to fit on one label (sometimes I have to get creative with the headings), and to get them to print on the labels right (I am pretty sure that was my school printer and not me).  The result was the best thing to ever happen to my grading.

I simply put the items they need to have; Table of Contents is ALWAYS the first item.  Next to each item I list the points they could earn for that item, and in a box on the right, I put the total points.  Anything I don't have to write out saves me precious minutes.

You can see what I mean about the printing issue on this one.  I did mine in Word on my work computer.  Word has a wonderful feature that allows you to pick the label you bought, type in one label, and fill the rest of them with the click of a button.

When I collected notebooks, I would grab my rubric sheet, grab the first notebook, start at the beginning and flip through to check everything.  I should also mention that I gave every student a bright post-it to mark where I put the last rubric before then turned their notebook in, so I could quickly flip to the starting point.

All I have to do is circle the number of points for each item and total.

These little gems saved me hours and hours of time over the course of the year.  I went from needing 6 hours to grade notebooks to less than 2 (if every student turned them in).

Our district uses 6+1 for our writing rubric.  I thought I would create a set for that, and I want you to have them for free.  They use Avery 8161 or any 1x4 inch label.  You can print it on plain paper and use tape too.
You  can download them from my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Be sure to check out all my Notebook posts.

How could you use these little beauties in your class?

Sunday Scoop 7/12

Today will be my first Sunday Scoop link-up of summer, and summer is half over...WHAT!

HAVE TO:

1) I honestly can't remember the last time I did this, and we have two cats...I realized how long it had been when I looked at the vacuum yesterday and saw the attachment.  That is a quick and easy job that is now on my monthly cleaning calendar.

2) Two days ago a drawer in the bathroom broke, so I had to take everything out and pile it in the corner to fix the drawer, which is now dry.  I am also part way through stripping the caulk off the tub, so hubby can put new on next week (Can you say gross job?), and I want to give the cupboard a fresh coat of white paint.

What hope projects are you working on?

3) You know that I do the scheduling for our district in Power School.  Today I need to update a couple of changes to the high school schedule due to some staffing shifts.  This won't take long, but I do need to sit down and do it.

HOPE TO:

1) I have a big product line I am working on for psychology.  I want to get that finalized and listed.  In addition I was accepted into the Oriental Trading Company Blogger Program, so I have a box of project stuff for a series of psychology hands-on projects that I want to get started on.

Can I have some feedback on the cover design?

2) I have a lovely Erin Cronden planner that I got a great deal on, but I have been really bad about using it this summer, so I am going to sit down with it today for an hour and update next week with everything I want to get done.

HAPPY TO:

1) Last spring I got a copy of The Daily 5, and I want to incorporate it into my high school classroom.  Stamina is such as issue for us too.  I want to sit on the deck and read the next chapter.  I can't wait to share with all of you my plans.

An Organized Freezer: 5 for Friday Style

Linking up for the first time this summer with  Doodlebugs Teaching for Five for Friday

This all began two days ago when I couldn't figure out what to make for dinner, so I went to the store even though we have a full chest freezer in the basement and are ordering another 1/4 side of beef.  That evening I came to the realization that I needed to do something about this lack of food planning on my part.

If you have been following along for any length of time, you know that I make menu plans during the school year and even plan leftovers to avoid throwing food away.

I went in search of a new freezer inventory printable that fit my style.  I came upon DIY Home Sweet Home and her organizational binder printables.

I printed off two: one for the freezer in the kitchen and one for the chest freezer in the basement.  Then I had to find my winter gloves for pulling everything out of the freezer- I highly recommend gloves if you are doing this to a chest freezer.

A piece of scrap paper and pencil  (I suggest a pencil because it works in the cold and won't smear if it gets wet from frost) were the only other tools I needed.

Did you go grab this printable?

My long-time friend Angel from

gave me great tips for freezer inventories years ago.

I pull organize it into piles (laundry baskets in my case) by type (pork, beef, vegetables, ready-to-eat, burger, etc) as I pull it out of the freezer.

Then as I put it back in, I write the item and quantity on the scratch paper.  I do this on scratch paper, so when I find the one rouge package of corn I don't have to mess up my pretty list.  I put the bigger and rarely used items like the whole turkey, hams, and stock in the bottom.  I then filled a cardboard box (I have lots due to my internet shopping problem) with all the steaks and venison.  Under that hanging basket was perfect for burger packs and pork chops.  The basket held things like jam jars and hot dogs.

I then did the same thing to the freezer in the kitchen; we have a side-by-side fridge.  I pulled everything out, sorted it, and put it back in with items on separate shelves.

It is free to Kindle Unlimited customers!

As I was going through both freezers I threw out stuff that wasn't labeled, was old, or wasn't a portion big enough for one person:  this wasn't much, but there were two sandwich baggies of something brown and unidentifiable that I pitched.  I also pulled out items that I thought we could use in the next few days:

-A small bowl of chicken soup
-Two bags of bean soup
-Frozen fruit
-One serving of Dole Whip
-Two large chicken breasts

I made smoothies today for the girls and I.

What is in your freezer that you could use this weekend?

This morning I baked zucchini bread, two stratas (one for now and one to freeze) and made another batch of jam.  My kitchen was a mess when I got done.

Overall it was very successful couple of days in my kitchen.

No picture from this one, but we are planning a luau party with some friends in order to grill off the massive quantities of meat in our freezer.

ePantry Review

I hate it when I go to clean the bathroom and am out of the products I use that are safe for my family!

Last month I discovered a great online resource for people on the go who believe in environmentally and toxin free home cleaning choices.  It also gives me the power to set up a monthly delivery (with no commitment), so I don't ever have to worry about running out of natural cleaners and having to settle for the chemical-laden ones at the store here in town.

I always want to do my part for the environment, but I also want products that fit my budget and are safe for my family.  All of their products are environmentally friendly and natural.  They carry brands such as Method and Mrs. Meyers.

When you first sign up, ePantry asks about your household and your family.  Then they recommend some products, quantities, and frequencies for you.  Then you can edit your shipment to fit what you actually need and will use.  I ended up getting $45 worth of cleaning and home products for $20; this is a great deal for me because our remote location means that all-natural, environmentally-friendly products are EXPENSIVE here.

My package arrived quickly, which says something giving we live in the middle of cow country, via FedEx.  We were on our way to dance class when it arrived, so I threw the box in the car, so I could check it out while the girls were at class.

Below is the set of products I ordered in my first shipment.  I haven't tried the Mrs. Meyer's dish washing tablets yet, but I am hoping they do as good of a job as the chemical-laden ones I use now.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I am excited to get cleaning with my new box of products nor can I believe that I got all of this for $20 and no shipping.

I have already gone online and scheduled my shipment for August with more of my favorites and some new items that I want to try.  I think I will even sign up for VIP and try it out.

Would you like $10 off your first order?  My readers will receive $10 off their first order when using the link in the image below.

Stitch Fix #9 July 2015

Last summer I signed up for my first Stitch Fix.  The promise is that for $20 (which gets credited towards any items you keep) you get five items hand-selected for you by a stylist.  You fill out a style profile and link a Pinterest board, so your stylists know what you like.

This month's box was pretty great.  It wasn't the best, but it certainly has pushed me a little more to think about what I want.  I left a note for my stylist this month.  I asked for transition pieces for work and a pencil skirt (I don't own one).  I think

First out of the box were the jeans and bag...OBVIOUSLY.

The jeans are dark navy skinny jeans that sit at my ankle.  I have been asking for jeans since fix #1 last fall.  I love my red jeans from my fall fix, and I really want more colored ones.

These were a delightful fit with just enough stretch to make them comfy for every day.  I am still debating on them, and would love your opinion.

The bag is a cross body bag.  The back has a zipper pouch and the flap comes up to reveal two pockets.  I asked for a bag two fixes ago, and I did not like what they sent.  This went in the opposite direction of big and colorful.  I am debating on this too as I only own one other cross-body, my purple Vera Bradley.

Mavi Freida Skinny Jeans $98
Street Level Demi Fold Over Vegan Leather Crossbody Bag $48

As I said I don not own a pencil skirt and my stylists keep telling me to pair my tops with one, so I thought it best to ask for one.  This is a superb option for my first pencil skirt experiences.  It is soft and stretchy, so I could move in it very easily.  Also, I won't wear something that is constricting or comfortable, which is why I don't have the white button down she suggested I pair it with.

I am in love with the pattern, but are pencil skirts supposed to ride up when you move a lot?   Never owning one, I don't know, but I do move A TON when I am at work.  This is the pieces I am most conflicted on.

Margaret M Christina Skirt $78

Next up is another 41Hawthorn tab-sleeve blouse. I have several blouses from Stitch Fix that match this style: black and purple.  This one was a salmon color and had some pleats on the front and back.

I really just can't get past this color, and I have several blouses like this.

41Hawthorn Breyson Pleated Tab-Sleeve Blouse $58

I know for sure I am keeping the last item.  I fell in love the second I put it on.  With the feminine ruffles on the sleeves and the bright pattern I am ready to put it on again, but I have house work to do.

It looks like ferns in blue and green.  I can move in it, which is a must for me.

July Pinterest Pick 3

So much time to Pinterest on vacation, so many pins to choose from.

I decided to go holiday themed for the Fourth of July.

First we did some decorating for the holiday weekend.

This was super easy.  All you need is a sieve, flour, and cardboard.

Cut a big star or two out of your cardboard. I could have used an old box, but I had just dropped our recycling off at the transfer station.  Lay your stencil out on the grass where you want it.  Sprinkle some flour into the sieve and shake.

Beware of doing this on windy days as the flour will blow around and leave white streaks.  Also lift your stencil up as flat as possible to avoid a Pintrest Fail like the bottom right photo.

Overall the walkway with stars on both sides looked fabulous.

We didn't find this on Pinterest, but I think it is Pinspiration worthy.  My 7-year-old Shmurtz made these for our company from England last night.

Berries, whipped topping, and pound cake cut with our star cookie cutter all layered in a pretty parfait glass. They were tasty Pin-r-ific!

The last Pinspiration hasn't been finished yet.  Here is the inspiration pin, but you will have to wait for my spin on it until next week.

July 2015 Currently

A huge thanks to Farley for doing this every month!

Listening: Our youngest LOVES Minecraft, and we struggle as parents to limit her screen time.  Yesterday I found some Playdough she got for Easter (still unopened) and brought it to the table.  She has been over there banging, cutting, and rolling now for almost an hour.  Proud Mama Moment.

Loving;  I always feel guilty reading books for pleasure during the school year when I am NEVER caught up on student papers.  Now that summer is here, I am devouring books.  I think I am on my fourth one in the last week.  Be sure to check out what I am reading Here.

Thinking:  The girls and I are spending the holiday weekend with my parents (hubby has to work) in Northern Michigan.  I am still in my pjs, so I am thinking about packing our bags for the trip, but I have yet to actually start.  Well, does having the bags out count?

Wanting:  We bought a pool last year, and sand isn't my favorite thing, but I have been dreaming of the beach for the last week.  Maybe we can make a trip while we are up North...of course it is always crazy on the holiday weekend.  Just some sand and a book would be fun.

Needing:  The summer slide has caught me, and I have several to-do lists on random pieces of paper. I haven't opened my planner in two weeks!  I think I need to update my calendar and lists before Monday.  I want a productive month of July since the girls are in a ton of activities, and I will be home most of the month.  How do you avoid falling into the unproductiveness of summer vacation?

All Star:  The above item aside, I am a very organized person.  In fact I probably should have taught math given the way I like lists, linear plans, and neatness.  I have been known to alphabetize my books on the shelf.  Maybe this is why my needing item is bothering me so much.  If we have a project (at home or work) I will layout a backwards plan with calendar reminders and steps to get it done...unless of course I am on summer vacation...LOL
