What is the teacher reading? December 2015

7:00 AM Sarah Koves 4 Comments

It has been a couple of months since I last shared what I have been reading-mostly because I was reading student essays.  I was able to squeeze in Charlotte by Virginia Taylor, Grace's Forgiveness by Molly Jebber, and A Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Badani.

Grace's Forgiveness
by Molly Jebber

Amish romance meets gambling gangsters in Grace's Forgiveness by Molly Jebber.  Grace meets Mark, who has moved from another Amish community due to his brother leaving the community and getting into trouble.  I believe it is love at first sight, but it takes them awhile to figure it out.  Not only does Mark's brother cause some trouble for them, but the thugs after Mark's brother come after Mark for money.  Grace breaks some of the community's rules to care for Mark...will they be able to over-come those challenges? While not a book I would use in my classroom, any Amish romance reader needs to pick up this book, which is the first in a series.

Available January 26th on Kindle and paperback

Charlotte
by Virginia Taylor

Book three in the South Landers series, Charlotte, does not disappoint.  I had not read the first two books in this series when I received this novel, but as a sucker for period romances, I was taken in quickly.  However, I was unsure on the setting until I read the description on Amazon, but perhaps if I had read the first two in the series, I would have had a clearer understanding of the where.  The story of Charlotte and Nicholas' marriage is filled with deception, misunderstandings, and half-truths.  Nicholas refuses to have children after loosing his first wife and only child in childbirth.  Charlotte needs to wed before her past becomes clear to protect her cousin and provide her a home.  I adore books that have unpredictable events, and that is what made this book a prize for me.

Available on February 2nd on Kindle and in paperback

Trail of Broken Wings
by Sejal Badani

Trail of Broken Wings has been on my reading list for months, and I am very happy that I finally picked it up and read it.  This story of four women finding their voices after their husband and father falls into a coma.  Each one of these women has an un-shared past and current secrets they hold.  If only the mother and sisters can open up to each other, they could move forward in united strength.

Trail of Broken Wings is available on Kindle and in paperback TODAY!

His Dream Role (Hot & Nerdy #5)
by Shannyn Schroeder
Release Date: December 22nd 2015
Lyrical Press

Summary:

Free Mitchell loves the theater. In his dreams he’s the one taking the spotlight. But so far he’s played against character by following in his father’s footsteps as an investment banker. When he’s masquerading as Dr. Who or Sherlock Holmes to help his brother, he feels he can escape his shy, dorky persona. But nothing’s prepared him to play boyfriend to a gorgeous girl like Samantha Wolf.

Samantha isn’t quite sure what to think of Free. He’s cute, sweet, and quirky, but his outlandish costumes make him seem crazy. However, it turns out Sam has a soft spot for theater nerds. And the more time they spend together, the more their steamy romance begins to take center stage. Only problem is, there doesn’t seem to be a script. And it’s anyone’s guess how this one will end.

Book Review: Zero Day by Jan Gangsei

I have received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Disney Book Group.

Robert Langdon meets Mark Zuckerburg in the computer-based mystery Zero Day by Jan Gangsei.  This new young-adult novel centers around Addie Webster, daughter of the president, who was kidnapped eight years ago.  This book kept me guessing for its entirety, which is not easily accomplished as I usually guess ending shortly in.  The twists of the terrorists acts, Addie's technology capabilities, and the whereabouts of Addie for all those years kept up late reading in order to find out what happens.

Addie returns to her family (now the first family of the United States) as mysteriously as she disappeared and reconnects with her childhood friend Darrow, whose mother is the Chief of Staff.  Addie has, in the time she was gone, picked up some extensive knowledge of computer systems.  What has Addie been up to these past eight years?  Does she have any connection to the terrorist acts playing out under her father's presidency? and What is she hiding from Darrow?

The only wish I had for the book was to have some of the why questions answered before the end.  It felt as though there was some more back story among Addie's kidnapper, her mother, and her father that didn't get properly cleared up.  I did get the feeling that Jan is setting us up for a second novel in a series.

Addie and Darrow are presented with situations that will enable young-adult readers to connect with them.  Political thrillers are not something I come across often in young-adult literature, but they are one of my favorite genres to pick up, so it make my heart happy to have novels for younger readers to expose them to a whole new set of literature.

Zero Day will make a captivating addition to any curriculum or reading list.  Certainly it will be on my recommendation list for our next media center order and will be prominently featured in a book talk in my classroom.  The strong female lead provides a refreshing addition to the realm of technology and mystery in young-adult fiction.

Zero Day by Jan Gangsei is available to the public starting January 12th, so be sure to pre-order copies today.

Be sure to pre-order your copy of the Kindle or hardcover editions.
